How to Take Care of Your Cashmere Sweater

A cashmere sweater is an expensive piece of cloth and you want to make sure that you are able to prolong its luxurious comfort for many years. Cashmere is very versatile for it can be worn during any season, so it is likely that it will always be worn. However, there are times when you need to take care of it to help to prolong the life span of this garment.

The first thing that you should be sure of is exactly what you are buying. Cashmere is composed of soft fibers that give you efficient insulation without the bulk of a heavy coat. The high moisture content of cashmere allows it to adjust to the humidity of any climate; this is the reason that cashmere can be worn during any season. There are only a few things that are more luxurious as true cashmere sweaters. Cashmere is smooth, not slick, so you should be able to tell the difference between cashmere and imitation.

Almost every cashmere sweater is made from two-ply fiber, so make sure that your clothing article says this. If it is, then you can be assured that your cashmere will last for many years.

To take care of your sweater, you will first want to guard against pilling. Keep an eye along the elbows and arms and try to avoid abrasive surfaces. If it does occur, make sure to cut them off with scissors as trying to brush them away will only cause further damage to your cashmere.

When you are going to wash your cashmere sweater, use only warm water and mild soap. The best way to wash and take care of your sweater is to hand wash your cashmere. However, if you insist on using a machine put it inside a pillow case and make sure to use the gentlest settings. Make sure that you avoid twisting or wringing your cashmere. That includes rolling sleeves up and stretching it when you are putting it on and off. The best way to dry your cashmere is to put it on a dry towel and lay the sweater on as its original shape. Then roll the towel up and press the towel to remove any moisture. Avoid letting the sweater hang by its own weight when wet for that will cause it to lose its shape over time.

When wearing your cashmere sweater, if you use lotions or deodorants, make sure that they dry out first. In general, avoid allowing your cashmere to get in contact with any chemicals. If you do have any stains, then it is best to dry clean.

When storing your cashmere sweater, first make sure that it is clean and freshly laundered. You may have heard that moths are attracted to wool. However, this needs some further modification to be correct: Moths are attracted to soiled and stained sweaters, not to the garnet itself. However, to add further protection, you could add natural moth repellants like a dried orange peel or cloves. You can wrap these in a sachet so that they do not stain your cashmere sweater.
